Garamond is a classic family of serif typefaces that carries the name of Claude Garamond, the renowned 16th-century French engraver.
His work has profoundly influenced modern typography, and the Garamond typeface family remains one of the most recognized and widely used fonts, particularly favored for book printing and body text.
The typefaces within the Garamond family are inspired by the designs of Aldus Manutius, a Venetian printer from the late 15th century, and his punch cutter, Francesco Griffo. These designs, created in 1495, belong to what is now known as the “Old Style” category of serif fonts.
Characterized by fluid, naturalistic shapes that resemble handwriting, Garamond's letterforms are slightly more upright and structured compared to true calligraphy, providing excellent readability and a timeless, elegant feel.
